Determining Fake Sony Ericsson Headsets (HPM-64, HPM-65, HPM-70, HPM-82 among others)

Yes it’s about fakes again, and yes it’s about another Sony product. Well Sony Ericsson anyway. What we’ll discuss is about how to know a fake Sony Ericsson headset and why to avoid it. Moreover, we’ll only tackle fake Walkman Series headsets which come in the following package designs.

Now the only Sony Ericsson Walkman headsets that I know which have packaging like the ones illustrated below are the HPM-64, HPM-65(Sport’s headset), HPM-70(bass headset), and HPM-82(superb bass with remote). I’m sure that there are a lot of other Walkman series phones which also arrive in the same packaging, but these are the models that I have seen to be faked.

I’ve seen lots of discussions telling us how to know if a Sony Ericsson headset is fake or not. Many say that you would know by looking at the clipping, the walkman logo, the Sony Ericsson logo at the earphones, or by the lining on the covering of the earphones. What they say may be true but I found their info a little unreliable because I didn’t find some of the signs they were saying in all of the fake Sony Ericsson headsets that I’ve been victimized with. Moreover, I’d like to know how to detect a fake Sony headset before I even buy it. Their info required me to at least buy the fake headset first as I needed to open the packaging.

What to watch out for:

1. The letter P of HPM (front of the packaging)

If you look closely at the lettering of Sony Ericsson HPM headsets you would notice that the P in HPM in a fake Sony Ericsson headset is smaller. It’s better to illustrate:

Fake Original

Fake

Notice how the P of the original is almost like its reaching for the letter M. It’s noticeably broader in the original than in the fake ones. If you’re buying a Sony Ericsson headset be sure to watch out for that devious letter P. You won’t need to buy the headset to notice it.

2. The letter P of HPM (back of the packaging)

Again, the P in HPM of fake headsets are smaller while the original ones are broader.

3. The www.sonyericsson.com at the back.

This is more noticeable than the first one as fake manufacturers don’t have a consistent lettering of the www.sonyericsson.com at the back.

Notice that the original is consistent on the lettering of the sony ericsson website. All the letters are in lowercase. If you look at the fake ones…

4. Sony Ericsson Warranty Stickers

Original Sony Ericsson products USUALLY have a Sony warranty. And with a Sony Ericsson warranty comes 3 Sony Ericsson stickers.

Fake Original

I have only twice encountered an original HPM headset which doesn’t have a warranty – so this isn’t really a sure-fire way of detecting a fake. But it’s still one more thing to watch out for.

Why are we going into so much trouble of detecting a fake product? Well the disadvantages are really annoying. I’ve discussed the disadvantages of fake Sony Ericsson headsets in another article. I really suggest you read it by clicking the link above.

great help! I didnt know there are differences in their packaging & appearance. they are so good to be true….

  2. Mae says:

Hi i cant tell if this is fake or not??
    please reply

  3. Ige says:

@Mae: You certainly won’t be able to tell from the single picture posted on the link you have provided. Even if he has posted more pictures, a seller can always post a picture of a genuine item and send you a fake one.

The seller’s price is way too low for an original headset. I bought a fake one for almost double that price (about 6 GBP). If you still want to buy from ebay, ask actual pictures from the seller of the item in its original packaging. That way you can use this article to validate its authenticity. Ask if it has SE warranty as well. By the way, I also ask for actual pics before I buy, and they usually give one to me.

We can’t blame the sellers always as they might not be aware that what they are selling are fake ones. Fake headsets look so real that they can really pass as original.

If all else fails buy from an actual store. An original headset is always worth the price.

LOL THE ACKING IS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE ?:)) I BUY THE PACKING OR I WANT TO BUY THE HEADPHONES?

    • Ige says:

Thank you for the comment radu.

But the headphones always come with the packaging. And it’s only natural that you can’t check the headphones but you can check the packaging as you can’t open the packaging unless you buy it. Other fake products are also detected this way as you can’t check the real merchandise before you buy.

If you want to check the difference in the headphones? Open it (which means you’ve bought it already. :D ) and then check the quality of the sound. That will be the DIFFERENCE.

I bought a pair of HPM-70′s before I learned about fakes. It came in package with the very same quirks as in your “fake” pictures. However, if my pair is fake, the Chinese are getting very good at it. My pair as none of the problems you mentioned in your other article. Of course, it’s always a crap shoot when buying fakes. Even if they are good, who knows how reliable they will be. Fit is tight, sound quality is not as rich as my Sennheiser CX-300′s but very good nevertheless. The mic is a little scratchier than my phone’s built in mic but very audible.

  6. Jinaah says:

Thanks alot. i’ve bought a fake one. :@

  7. Jinaah says:

can i trust those sellers on** ebay? they say they’ve OEM headsets? can i trust them?

  8. Alex says:

i just bought a new pair of headphones… the hpm-70… according to this everything is legit except the website and warranty. According to the other post about disadvantages of fakes, none of those stuff apply to my headphones. I have tried calling and it is good quality… also the music quality is great. When i checked the ACTUAL headphones for the signs of fake it seemed to be all real. So the only thing that makes my headphones fake is there is that the website is wrong and there is no warranty….. so im not quite sure if it is real of fake… please let me know soon :)

    • Ige says:

Sometimes (although very rare) there are original headphones which do not have warranties but I haven’t encountered a headphone which have discrepancies on the lettering of the website.

I guess if you’re enjoying great sound then you have nothing to worry about.
