If you do use 512 kbps it would definitely be faster but would have a lower quality. Distortion would depend on the type of video. I suggest that you still try 512kbps so you would now if the videos you have are optimized for that kind of quality in the 5800. You might not even notice any difference in video quality and even benefit from the smaller file size and better performance. The video bitrate is roughly the quality of the video.
