Convert Movies and Videos for your Nokia 5800

Using the best free video conversion software and the right settings, you’ll have the best movies and videos for your Nokia 5800.

The Nokia 5800 is not just for music but is also one of the best mobile phones to watch videos and movies because of its large display size (640×360). We’ve already shown in previous articles how to convert videos/movies for other mobile phones such as the Nokia E71, E61i, E61 and Sony Ericsson P1i.

Now we’ll convert videos or movies for the Nokia 5800.

Below are three video conversion applications we can use to convert videos and movies for the Nokia 5800.

Super Video Converter

If you’re going to use Super Video Converter to convert videos and movies, I suggest that you first read How to Use Super Video Converter. The download link for the installer of Super Video Converter is also there.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Super (and know how to use it), use the conversion settings below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia 5800.

Just follow the settings indicated or shown below:

Convert Videos Movies for Nokia 5800 graphic05

Output File: mp4
Output Video Codec: mpeg-4
Output Audio Codec: AAC LC

Video General Options: Both unchecked
Video Scale Size: 640×360
Video Aspect: 16:9
Video Frame/Sec: 25
Video Bitrate: 816
Video Other Options: “High Quality” and “48k Audio” are checked

Audio General Options: Both unchecked
Audio Sampling Frequency: 44100
Audio Channels: 2
Audio Bitrate: 112
DVD Language Select: default

Note: Based from the preloaded video (Batman – The Dark Knight) in the Nokia 5800, it can handle 2,121 kbps of Video Bitrate and 30 frames/sec. Being a music phone, I’m sure it can handle more than 112kbps of Audio Bitrate as well.

So if the source video file or the video you want to convert has a higher Video Bitrate and higher frames per second, you can adjust the settings so you could have a better quality video. The same goes for the audio. If conversion is too long for you or the converted video file is larger than the source video file, you can decrease the video bitrate from 816kbps (take note that you’ll be decreasing the video quality as well).

If you find that audio and video are not synchronized, you can check the frame rate of the source video file by double-clicking the source video file which you added in Super. A new window would appear at the right where you would need to take note of the Frame rate under the Video category. You can use this setting to replace the Video Frame/Sec setting above.

MediaCoder Transcoder

MediaCoder is another video converter which is as powerful and as flexible as Super. If you encounter problems using Super you can use MediaCoder instead. I suggest that you first read How to Use MediaCoder if this is your first time to use this. You will also find the download link of MediaCoder there.

Once you’ve installed MediaCoder (and know how to use it) Just use the conversion settings in the screenshots below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia 5800.

Convert Videos Movies for Nokia 5800 graphic08

Convert Videos Movies for Nokia 5800 graphic09

If you’ve entered the correct settings, the summary should show the following:

Note: If the converted file is larger than the source file, try to check the video bitrate of the source file if it’s smaller than the 816kbps. If it is, set it to that number. So if the video bitrate of the source file is just 500kbps, in the conversion settings above, replace 816 with 500. You can check for the video bitrate of the source file by clicking at the source file in MediaCoder and then checking the properties window located at its right.

Videora Nokia 5800 Video Converter

You can also use Videora’s Nokia 5530 Video Converter if you just want to quickly convert videos for your Nokia 5800 and don’t want to think about conversion settings much,. It’s not as flexible as the two mentioned earlier (in terms of video quality, file size, aspect ratio, etc.) but it’s the easiest to use!

You can download it directly from Videora’s Nokia 5800 site page.

If you still want to use other converters other than the ones listed here, I’ve compiled the best free video converters available today.

There you have it! I hope I have helped you convert videos or movies for your Nokia 5800!

    and Thank You!

  2. Pepps says:

Dont find anything to use, tried Super but it took a long time to convert and i got a big ass file:S

And to get subtitle to your video you can use VirtualDub, for that u probably need some codecs and Vobsub

  3. Sutorcen says:

The best converter yet. Not the simplest one. But once you get the hang of it it’s as easy as 1.2.3. Use the settings provided here and up the bit rate up to 1600. Works great.

  4. Marijn says:

Thank you so much. I was just looking for this. Awesome explanation! Thank you so much!

  5. William R says:

Thank you – your instructions worked perfectly and my search for a working MKV converter is over.

  6. garria10 says:

Great programme – but it only worked once and now always comes up with “An ERROR has occured. Click here to read more”. I’ve reset the settings and they are as described. I’ve tried a variety of source files in different formats (MP2 MP4 VOB TS) with he same result each time. It won’t even recode the originally successful file again. Any ideas?

  7. Anantha P Iyer says:

Brilliant stuff. Worked perfectly for my Nokia 5800. Thanks

  8. Tijmen says:

it takes hours and i get a huge file what do i do wrong?

    • Ige says:

If you want to speed up encoding and reduce the file size try lowering the video bitrate (which is set to 816kbps in our settings). However, this would also lower the quality of the video.

    Garria is Right.
“An ERROR has occured. Click here to read more”
    will pop out.
I convert one video but after that.
    POOOP. there’s nothing to do.
    I tried re-installing it.
I also try to use the old version one but i couldn’t open.

    • Ige says:

That’s odd. I’ve been using mine wih no problems at all. All of my friends do as well. If you get an error from Super saying that it can’t convert the file here are the steps I recommend. Try the solutions one at a time.

      1. Check your conversion settings. Sometimes people overlook this but most people just have the wrong conversion settings. Please make sure that you have the right conversion settings. DirectShow Decode must be turned off or unchecked.

      2. Try uninstalling and then re-installing Super.

      3. Check DirectShow Decode. This tells Super to use the video/audio codecs in your PC. The DirectShow engine of our PC would be used.

      4. Install HaaliMatroskaSplitter and ffdshow. And when you try to encode or convert your video make sure DirectShow Decode is checked.

      5. Install Super in another computer. Isolate the problem and check if it will convert in another computer with Super installed.

  15. krish says:

I’m also getting the same error… “An ERROR has occured. Click here to read more”. Any more suggestions please…

  19. Andrew says:

    Hi!

If you want to convert videos for your 5800XM simply, try to use formatfactory 2.10 instead of SUPER. I am not saying, that it is better than SUPER – I used it before several times and can say it is OK – but it is way easier with FF. And which takes the cake in my case, the FF also burns the subtitles into the converted movie as well (probably if the subtitle has “the same name as the movie.srt” filename.

    Try it!

    Byez

    • Ige says:

      Great suggestion Andrew!

I’ll check the converter and then incorporate it to the guide/tutorial if it checks out to be good. Thanks again for the great suggestion!

    • Akki says:

agree..Listen to this guy…i tried it on his suggestion and believe m its very good…saves time and video quality is superb..

    Any ideas??

  23. Matt says:

  25. Jaydeep says:

    Hi guys,

Just used this converter for Nokia 5800. Its great!!

    The Pros:
The output quality of the video is AWESOME!!!
    Very easy to use.

    The Cons:
It takes a lot of time (5 hrs to convert 700MB movie).
The output file size is huge 1.1GB.

  26. AJ says:

Where can I download the file ?

  27. Fox says:

    Hi there…

I can’t convert a movie video with super.

I’ve tried to convert a short movie preview with 640 x 360, 16:9, 30 fps, 2400 kbps, Hi Quality, 48 K audio, 4800 Hz, 2 ch, 128 kbps, it worked, and it always worked with short movie.

But when I tried to convert a whole movie like transformers 2 with the same setting it always come up with ERROR, even when I had uninstall super & install matroska & ffdshow.

I don’t check the Direct Show because it will create a border in the movie, I want the movie to be able to play in full screen with no black border. Can somebody help me with this?

I’ve tried FormatFactory but the movie always freeze in certain frame. It’s not playing smoothly.

    • Ige says:

Have you tried with other long videos? Maybe the problem is with the source video file?

Have you also tried to change the frame rate from 30fps to 25fps? How about changing the video bitrate to something lower?

  28. john says:

works fantastic, the quality is great but the audio playback does not coincide withe video, the audio seems to be moving faster than what is displayed on the video..how do i fix this …. please HElP!

    • Ige says:

I suggest you change the video frames per second. If it was set to 25, try increasing or decreasing it to match the frames of your original video file.

  29. viswanath says:

thanks man…it works just fine….though the file size increases a lot…

  30. waleed says:

man!! it worked and converted i just dont know where the out put folder is!!

    • Ige says:

By default, Super puts it at the same folder as the source file. You could press Ctrl+T while in Super to check (and even assign) where Super saves its output.

how to download Super Video Converter

  32. mike says:

I converted a movie using the Nokia Ovi suite, the video is great but I don’t have audio, pls. help.

  33. Hari says:

It’s cool set of tools to covert any video to play on Nokia 5800. One drawback with Super is it does not provide DVD cutter functionality. If you want just to create MP4 for a specific portion of VOB use Chopper XP (gives portion of video in VOB) and then followed by Super to convert.

  34. jaglovarna says:

    it is not working!!

  35. DoDy says:

where i can download theese program??i dont see the download button

  36. Akki says:

Guys!!!Do not use any of the above…Use FormatFactory..if you dont you are gonna regret..beleive the conversion time is less and video quality is superb…

  37. samjosh says:

    Thanks for the post.

I tried Media Encoder with the settings you specified. My phone is struggling to play the movie sometimes. Total file size: 760 MB

Is it something to do with bitrate? What does bitrate signify? If i use 512kbps will the rendering on mobile be faster without distortion? Please reply. Thanks a lot.

    • Ige says:

The video bitrate is roughly the quality of the video. If you do use 512 kbps it would definitely be faster but would have a lower quality. Distortion would depend on the type of video.

I suggest that you still try 512kbps so you would now if the videos you have are optimized for that kind of quality in the 5800. You might not even notice any difference in video quality and even benefit from the smaller file size and better performance.

  38. Jem says:

I am getting an Application error

The procedure * could not be located in the DLL d3d9.dll.

    Ant suggestions?

  39. moiz says:

    Hey lge,

    thanks for this lovely tutorial.

i followed all the steps you have mentioned but I get this problem with my conversion.

When I convert the video with a bitrate eg 400, the output video comes out to be of 2254 (or something of such high value) bitrate.

i even tried a bitrate as low as 128, the output file turned out to be of 1400 kbps.

This results in a very big file.

Please help, if you have come across this problem.
    cheers

  40. Sugar Ray says:

Hi, it works perfectly fine on my PC… i tried with one movie,, worked fine… then i tried it on another, i got an error… i dont know what to do…

here are the details on the movie i want to transfer:
    height x width : 608 x 336
    bit rate : 112 kbps
    audio format : lame MP3
    frame rate : 23/s
    data rate : 100 kbps
    vid sample size : 12bit
    vid compression : XVID

    help please, appreciate it

    • Sugar Ray says:

im using SUPER by the way with the settings shown in this website

    • Ige says:

Just use either converters and I’m pretty sure you would be able to convert the video so you would be able to play it in your 5800.

If you can’t make it work on Super, just try MediaCoder Transcoder.

  41. Georges says:

  44. EAGLE75 says:

    GR8 guide,

The values you present are absolutely sufficient.
Using Super 2010 build.37 i tried to max out my 5800 (fw v50.0.005)
Even with the following settings the vid plays smooth.

    Video Frame/Sec: 30
    Video Bitrate: 1920

    Audio Bitrate: 160

Size difference for 2:24 trailer (Iron Man 2) are 15.5MB original settings and 28.4MB maxed. Nearly doubling the size with slight improvements in visual quality. Personaly i´m going to stay with the numbers you presented :)

  45. Amit says:

when i am playing encoded video on my 5800 video hangs only audio goes on , what is the problem?

    • Ige says:

Try lowering the bitrate of your video. You might be encoding too much bitrate (the original file may have a significantly lower bitrate than what you have specified in the conversion settings)

  46. Bruno says:

    Ige, awesome tutorial.

That worked for me as a charm, thanks a lot.

  47. Vedank says:

Thanks for this ! i will go for this..m searched a lot for it.

  48. Mike A Bram says:

Ige i’m not downloading the converter yet bcoz i’m not to sure, better than wasting my time right? I want to convert flv video format, is the setting are same just like in the picture above? Hope it helps, thx

    • Ige says:

Yes it should work. FLV is actually a popular file format and should convert rather easily. The only problem you’ll have is the quality as FLV videos are usually lower in quality. Some of the FLV videos you convert to be used in the Nokia 5800 might not look good.

  49. Mike A Bram says:

Ige i’m not downloading the converter yet bcoz i’m not to sure, better than wasting my time right? I want to convert flv video format, is the setting are same just like in the picture above? Hope it helps, thx.

  50. Daniela says:

Hi there! Thanks for this great tutorial! It worked great. The only problem was that the videos that I converted were 4:3 and were converted stretched… How should I configure super to keep the video with the same proportion? I tried to change the aspect ratio to 4:3 but it didn’t change. I believe I have to change the video scale size, right?
    Thanks again!
