Convert Movies and Videos for your Nokia 5800
Using the best free video conversion software and the right settings, you’ll have the best movies and videos for your Nokia 5800.
The Nokia 5800 is not just for music but is also one of the best mobile phones to watch videos and movies because of its large display size (640×360). We’ve already shown in previous articles how to convert videos/movies for other mobile phones such as the Nokia E71, E61i, E61 and Sony Ericsson P1i.
Now we’ll convert videos or movies for the Nokia 5800.

Below are three video conversion applications we can use to convert videos and movies for the Nokia 5800.
Super Video Converter
If you’re going to use Super Video Converter to convert videos and movies, I suggest that you first read How to Use Super Video Converter. The download link for the installer of Super Video Converter is also there.
Once you’ve downloaded and installed Super (and know how to use it), use the conversion settings below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia 5800.
Just follow the settings indicated or shown below:

Output File: mp4
Output Video Codec: mpeg-4
Output Audio Codec: AAC LC
Video General Options: Both unchecked
Video Scale Size: 640×360
Video Aspect: 16:9
Video Frame/Sec: 25
Video Bitrate: 816
Video Other Options: “High Quality” and “48k Audio” are checked
Audio General Options: Both unchecked
Audio Sampling Frequency: 44100
Audio Channels: 2
Audio Bitrate: 112
DVD Language Select: default
Note: Based from the preloaded video (Batman – The Dark Knight) in the Nokia 5800, it can handle 2,121 kbps of Video Bitrate and 30 frames/sec. Being a music phone, I’m sure it can handle more than 112kbps of Audio Bitrate as well.
So if the source video file or the video you want to convert has a higher Video Bitrate and higher frames per second, you can adjust the settings so you could have a better quality video. The same goes for the audio. If conversion is too long for you or the converted video file is larger than the source video file, you can decrease the video bitrate from 816kbps (take note that you’ll be decreasing the video quality as well).
If you find that audio and video are not synchronized, you can check the frame rate of the source video file by double-clicking the source video file which you added in Super. A new window would appear at the right where you would need to take note of the Frame rate under the Video category. You can use this setting to replace the Video Frame/Sec setting above.
MediaCoder Transcoder
MediaCoder is another video converter which is as powerful and as flexible as Super. If you encounter problems using Super you can use MediaCoder instead. I suggest that you first read How to Use MediaCoder if this is your first time to use this. You will also find the download link of MediaCoder there.
Once you’ve installed MediaCoder (and know how to use it) Just use the conversion settings in the screenshots below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia 5800.

If you’ve entered the correct settings, the summary should show the following:

Note: If the converted file is larger than the source file, try to check the video bitrate of the source file if it’s smaller than the 816kbps. If it is, set it to that number. So if the video bitrate of the source file is just 500kbps, in the conversion settings above, replace 816 with 500. You can check for the video bitrate of the source file by clicking at the source file in MediaCoder and then checking the properties window located at its right.
Videora Nokia 5800 Video Converter
You can also use Videora’s Nokia 5530 Video Converter if you just want to quickly convert videos for your Nokia 5800 and don’t want to think about conversion settings much,. It’s not as flexible as the two mentioned earlier (in terms of video quality, file size, aspect ratio, etc.) but it’s the easiest to use!
You can download it directly from Videora’s Nokia 5800 site page.
If you still want to use other converters other than the ones listed here, I’ve compiled the best free video converters available today.
There you have it! I hope I have helped you convert videos or movies for your Nokia 5800!

The best converter for nokia 5800.Thanks
I’m using the built-in video converter that comes with Nokia PC Suite, called Nokia Video Manager. Inspite of using it with the setting of Nokia 5800, the videos do not play. It gives the ‘unable to play video file, trying to play partially’ error message. Why???
Hi SAF,
That is the reason why I don’t use the Nokia Video Manager. Just use Super Video Converter and follow the steps here and you should be correctly converting videos.
cannot find the ”Encode (Active Files)” button at the bottom. for step 5.
Are you using an Asus EEE pc? or Acer aspire one? or any UMPC or Netbook? If you are increase the resolution. The “Encode (Active Files)” must have been cut off due to the screen size as its in the bottom.
That really works, man. Thanks. Now I can just convert whatever video I want. Awesome!
Thanks a lot, you saved me from a lot of work, i owe you one
Thank you for the guide
It’s really easy when you explained it like that.
Many thanks, and big grats for the nice site.

I have followed this thread, buuuut i experience time delay with audio…maybe ill try setting the fps to 23.976
Try different video frame rates. This is usually the reason for the not synched audio.
How do I get zune videos to play on the nokia 5800
Hi stu,
Just try converting the the zune video files using Super video converter and the conversion settings in the article.
Hi,
Followed all the steps, but when I click ‘Encode’ is get the following messgae: I/O Error 103.
What to do?
Hi Luc,
Have you tried another video file? Have you also tried using Super in another computer? I’m just trying to isolate where the problem is.
Its good but how i add subtitles ????
i dont mind if they are permanent
I did all the steps but an error message comes up on the phone saying it is unable to play clip
Please help
Make sure you’ve got all settings right. Try also with a different video file preferably a file with a different extension.
keep getting an error meaage tried 3 different files now !!
Maybe its because of your computer. Have you tried with a different PC?
Well, when I open it, it says the date is invalid. Whatever, it loads up. Then I tried to import the settings file… It says another error. I made it manually… And when I hit ‘Encode’, I wait a few secs and the program disappears!!! HELP!
did you download the link to the AVS video encoder instead of the Super one…the links are confusing the AVS one doesnt work and its right above the correct link.
also is there a way to keep 4:3 video at that aspect without stretching it to the 16:9 format that the phone is? when i try to change the aspect ratio in the phone’s video player for orignally 4:3 video nothing happens and it is always in the widescreen 16;9 format.
I tried clicking on 4:3 under aspect in the SUPER converter but it didn’t change anything and all the videos get stretched to widescreen which makes them look weird when they should be 4:3.
Hi Tom,
I’ve tried converting 4:3 videos using the setting above and they look ok to me. But if you really want to preserve the aspect ratio, why don’t you use 480×360 video scale size with 4:3 aspect ratio? I haven’t tried that but I hope you tell us your results.
hey using 480×360 as the ratio and selecting 4:3 as the ratio seems to work, now i can zoom in so it takes up the full screen but its not stretched out weird. thanks a lot.
Its giving me an error message! Please help! Ive tried many different files but no luck.
Have you tried it in a different computer?
thanxx !!!!
first of all, when i import settings from the spf-file i don’t get the correct setting. I set everything manual according to the screen dump above. The conversion allways fail, just after a few seconds and I’m getting the an ERROR har ocurred message.
I don’t have another computer to test it on, is there a specefic reason why it won’t work on some computors??
I have using this and encoded loads of stuff, yet yesterday when I went onto it I was toldl there was a new version available and I chose it. Since then I cant encode any files, when I choose the options named above for the Nokia 5800 settings it throws up something totally different to the settings pictured above. When i try to encode it lasts about 10 secs before an error message comes up. Alternatively when I change to the settings manually to whats displayed and try it that way again i get the error message after about 10 secs. i had been using this perfectly before this update and now cant do anything which is very frustrating as I watch a lot of tv shows and movies on my phone travelling to work.
I am also having the same problem. Super was working perfectly before with the previous version that I was using, but after updating to the latest version today, I can’t encode movies anymore – always get an error after “parsing input file” completes. Help??
Sorry – my mistake. The settings configuration wasn’t loading properly, so I was entering the settings manually – I had the first drop-down box wrong! All working fine now – thanks again for a great post, very helpful!
Thanks for informing me 5800fan. I was having problems replicating your problem and I was about to give up when you posted that you solved it already. Great job and I hope you enjoy watching videos in your Nokia 5800!
Thanks for this tip!
Greets from Norway
nice one man
thank you man for this… it’s really cool..
i wish i could send you all of my june allowance but i cannot possibly do that for i already spent it.. woooots..
just trying to make you smile..
xo
Haha, you made me laugh. Thanks for appreciating though!
hey thanks…the only con is ta tit takes a long time and the files generated are huge…good for people wanting to watch high quality videos but for watching a song video etc smaller conversions wud b good…thanks anyway
If you want to decrease conversion time and you’re just converting small videos, try lowering the Video bitrate (Kbps) from 816kbps. A lower bitrate would lower the quality but would decrease conversion time.
nice
gz it takes a lon time to convert 900mb of movie ;b
but it works so far
nice
gz it takes a lon time to convert, it has taken like 10min to convert 40mb movie, så if u have like 900mb of movie it can take a while ;b
but if it works its all worth it
when u encode a movie on super converter how do u put it on ur nokia 5800
Just transfer the file using the data cable.
super converter doesnt work for me at all.
but i found something waaay easier, i doubt its better but this is as easy as it gets, just find your movie and select output name and place.
http://www.brothersoft.com/doremisoft-free-avi-to-mp4-converter-download-169693.html
The converter you gave is for avi to mp4 only. It’s a good alternative but onl supports one kind of file.
For some reason whenever i tried to convert multiple files the app just closes out and fails to open. hav to uninstall and reinstall…so gae up after 5 tries and now trying a ‘XILISOFT DVD ripper’… will let u know if it works, tho the customisation in this software is rather poor and i am forced to choose 640×480 resolution…
Is this supposed to take so LONG
And when the green bar goes to full, and you think is gonna finish the bar empty’s again!
Im doing a 700mb movie and its done about 400mb
The green bar lies!
Yes the green bar lies.
As I mentioned previously, when you’re converting a large file the green bar isnt really a good measuring stick for the progress of conversion. Just wait it out
subtitles ?
add subtitles ???
Sorry Shex, but Super can’t add subtitles.
man i swear ur gr8 its awesome converter now i can convert any video i want before it was a problem for me thank u man n keep bringing more programmmes like that:D
Glad I was of help.
thanks man, thats really cool of you to help
You’re welcome jack.
what an amazing program. thanks for this tip.
unlike many previous message it works sooo fast on my vista 64bit
That’s great!
Hey,
i have been looking for a good converter for my 5800 and i stumbled upon this forum. I have tried all the steps required and my is still giving me “Unable to play video clip”
Help.
Try to make sure that you got all settings correct. Enter them one by one and make sure you don’t miss one – especially the output container and output video codec. Also, use the latest Super Video Converter. It should be able to work.
Hi IGE,
I have just bought the 5800 mx and I have read your instructions above on how to d/l movies ,I have gone onto Pedia home page but cannot see Super Video Converter only av4u.Could yopu please assist, you mention to be sure to d/l from (R/0) what is (R/O0.

Hi,
further to my last post.
I have now installed SVC and can easily drop and drag files /movie clips into the box HOWEVER a few seconds after it has converted an `error` message appears.I have checked the instructions and have entered the correct settings I have read on several posts that the fault could lie with the actual clips.could you assist please ?.
Hi robocop,
could you try converting other videos? So we could isolate the problem?
i converted a video and i see black screen and i hear the sound i fallowed all the steps. any one can help? . Thanks
Make sure you got all settings right. Try other video files as well so ou could isolate the problem.
Hey, good job on this but a real shame that the 5800 doesn’t support divx out of the box! doe anyone know of any good newsgroups where pre-encoded 5800 movies can be found. Legally of course =]
I’m bored of waiting for this thing to encode..!!
Hehe sorry Nokiaboi, I don’t know any.
You must be encoding large files.
Thanks this software and your tips both are awesome…
Thanks Amit!

HOW TO DOWNLOAD THE VIDEO CONVERTER
There’s a link above Harry. You can download it from eRightSoft or Softpedia. It’s easier to download in SoftPedia.
Does anyone know how I get subtitles to the converted movie?
Thanks for this, I just bought a nokia 5800
You have increased the fun factor on my new phone by a thousandfold (yea…I love movies)…so yea…thanks!!
Ok i have a problem. I encoded the video, transfered it to my phone, and when the movie comes to 17 mins, it freezes. I try to fast forward it, but it doesnt work. My settings are a bit different, i set higher video bitrate and audio bitrate, because Nokia does support them. And when I try to convert it with your settings, in the end it shows a message “An ERROR has occured. Click here to read more”. Can anyone help me please?
Try lowering the video bitrate as the original video file might have a lower video bitrate (lower than 800kbps). Try setting the audio bitrate to 128kbps as well.
I followed all the steps from 1 to 5 exactly and have tried this with several different .avi files, but i always get the same error message at the bottom of the application, where is says ‘an error has occured, click here to read more’ it doesn’t tell me the reason, can someone help? When I had the previous version of SUPER, this worked fine.
Try lowering the video bitrate from 816kbps to the next lower video bitrate (768kbps or 720kbps). Try to increase the bitrate of the audio as well to 128kbps. Tell me if it works.
After reading the testimony of the users, I was quite impressed and interested with this software. I wish in next version, there we can see the estimated time. Because its been almost 3 and half hours, I am waiting for the complete encoding of 900 MB sized file.
Try lowering the video bitrate. The quality make go down but encoding time would sure be faster.
Great tips, seems too good to be true. Really useful for those long trips… Two questions now, if you may. 1) How does playing the videos affect battery life – I mean, have you any experience how long can the battery play movies? Couple of hours or more? 2) The .mp4 files seem to be larger than .avi files with the settings in this guide. Is this supposed to be so? I can always lower the bitrates, but if I’ve done something wrong to cause this I’d like to know. Thanks again
I guess battery life would go down a couple of hours if you always play movies. The good thing about the 5800 is that it has along battery life.
Sometimes the converted file can become larger than the source file especially if the bitrate of the source file is lower than what we indicated in the conversion settings. The trick there is to lower the video bitrate. It’s ok to play with the video bitrate.
hi Ige
I want whether these settings will work all video formats…. moreever how to fine the bitrate for video…
Yes this would work in almost any video format. If you have a high bitrate video, you could increase the video bitrate setting.
it’s work TANKS … and for beter quality use 2,121 kbps of Video bitrate ,30 fps ,and for audio i use 160 kbps or higher
2121 kbps video? Man you must have a very high quality source video. Remember though that if the source video does not have a high video and audio bitrate and you set the conversion video bitrate very high, it won’t make the quality higher. You’ll just make the conversion time longer.
Glad you’re enjoying watching videos in your Nokia 5800!
