Convert Movies and Videos for your Nokia 5800
Using the best free video conversion software and the right settings, you’ll have the best movies and videos for your Nokia 5800.
The Nokia 5800 is not just for music but is also one of the best mobile phones to watch videos and movies because of its large display size (640×360). We’ve already shown in previous articles how to convert videos/movies for other mobile phones such as the Nokia E71, E61i, E61 and Sony Ericsson P1i.
Now we’ll convert videos or movies for the Nokia 5800.

| The Nokia 5800 in Batman – The Dark Knight Movie |
Below are three video conversion applications we can use to convert videos and movies for the Nokia 5800.
Super Video Converter
If you’re going to use Super Video Converter to convert videos and movies, I suggest that you first read How to Use Super Video Converter. The download link for the installer of Super Video Converter is also there.
Once you’ve downloaded and installed Super (and know how to use it), use the conversion settings below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia 5800.
Just follow the settings indicated or shown below:

Output File: mp4
Output Video Codec: mpeg-4
Output Audio Codec: AAC LC
Video General Options: Both unchecked
Video Scale Size: 640×360
Video Aspect: 16:9
Video Frame/Sec: 25
Video Bitrate: 816
Video Other Options: “High Quality” and “48k Audio” are checked
Audio General Options: Both unchecked
Audio Sampling Frequency: 44100
Audio Channels: 2
Audio Bitrate: 112
DVD Language Select: default
Note: Based from the preloaded video (Batman – The Dark Knight) in the Nokia 5800, it can handle 2,121 kbps of Video Bitrate and 30 frames/sec. Being a music phone, I’m sure it can handle more than 112kbps of Audio Bitrate as well.
So if the source video file or the video you want to convert has a higher Video Bitrate and higher frames per second, you can adjust the settings so you could have a better quality video. The same goes for the audio. If conversion is too long for you or the converted video file is larger than the source video file, you can decrease the video bitrate from 816kbps (take note that you’ll be decreasing the video quality as well).
If you find that audio and video are not synchronized, you can check the frame rate of the source video file by double-clicking the source video file which you added in Super. A new window would appear at the right where you would need to take note of the Frame rate under the Video category. You can use this setting to replace the Video Frame/Sec setting above.
MediaCoder Transcoder
MediaCoder is another video converter which is as powerful and as flexible as Super. If you encounter problems using Super you can use MediaCoder instead. I suggest that you first read How to Use MediaCoder if this is your first time to use this. You will also find the download link of MediaCoder there.
Once you’ve installed MediaCoder (and know how to use it) Just use the conversion settings in the screenshots below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia 5800.

If you’ve entered the correct settings, the summary should show the following:

Note: If the converted file is larger than the source file, try to check the video bitrate of the source file if it’s smaller than the 816kbps. If it is, set it to that number. So if the video bitrate of the source file is just 500kbps, in the conversion settings above, replace 816 with 500. You can check for the video bitrate of the source file by clicking at the source file in MediaCoder and then checking the properties window located at its right.
Videora Nokia 5800 Video Converter
You can also use Videora’s Nokia 5530 Video Converter if you just want to quickly convert videos for your Nokia 5800 and don’t want to think about conversion settings much,. It’s not as flexible as the two mentioned earlier (in terms of video quality, file size, aspect ratio, etc.) but it’s the easiest to use!
You can download it directly from Videora’s Nokia 5800 site page.
If you still want to use other converters other than the ones listed here, I’ve compiled the best free video converters available today.
There you have it! I hope I have helped you convert videos or movies for your Nokia 5800!

it works fine…and is fast…
Thanks vishal. It’s nice to know that someone appreciates the article.
Thanks again!
Thanks man, that is an excellent how-to. It helped a lot.
You’re most welcome PoppaDuck. I’m glad I was able to help you.
thanks.. i will try it
does it work for realplayer?????? can anyone help me>
Yes this definitely works for the Realplayer. The Realplayer is the default video player of the 5800 and this guide is made for that.
thanx..really good how-to
the settigns file keeps playing up (comes up with very different settings all over the place) but when i put the settings by hand -> pure win!
(128kb audio/ 13xx video works fine!)
try increasing audio/video bitrate a bit for crazy good results
cheers for this
Yes sometimes Super Video Converter does that. That’s the reason I included the actual settings so that even if the import settings does not load properly, you can key them in yourself. Super Video Converter isn’t perfect (still has various bugs – its free anyway) but all in all, its still a very good converter.
In the audio settings, it really depends on your source file. I just indicated 112kbps as this is the most common. If your source file is 128kbps you could maximize the conversion and indicate 128kbps setting. However, if your source file is just 112kbps its better that your conversion settings aren’t higher than that.
I’m glad this worked for you! All the people I know who have the Nokia 5800 are already doing the steps I indicated here. Thanks a lot for your feedback!
Gone through the whole process but it never actually generates an output file despite spending a great deal of time encoding.
Tried twice with two different output file locations.
Make sure you’ve indicated correctly where the output file will be saved. You might also have mistaken the conversion to be complete as the green progress bar is really not a good indicator of conversion progress. Once it reaches full green, it goes back and still encodes. So make sure it’s really finished and wait it out. Try manually keying in the conversion settings as well.
great advice on how to do this found it very easy to use, but I have one question, some of my videos file are in batches vts_01_1 to vts_01_4 how do I make this into one mp4 file? or am I doing something wrong by having all them files? hope someone can help, thanks.
Hi Jason,
I’m sure your source files are in batches so you’re not doing anything wrong. Conversion is one is to one – so 1 source file is to 1 output file. You have to use another application to join your mp4 files as Super can’t join multiple files.
ok thanks for that, have you any suggestion/recommandations as to what I can use to create one video file.
I can’t really suggest any software right now as I would have to test them first. Once there’s an application worth mentioning and I tested it to be ok, I will feature it in this site. In the meantime, why don’t you subscribe to the RSS or Email feed?
Thanks!
Hi Jason,
I have tested an application which you could use. Although it doesn’t join MP4 files, you can use it to merge/join MPEG files, AVI files, Real Media files, and Windows Video files. Just go to the link I’ve provided. I hope you find it useful.
I try to convert a whole movie around 1.28 GB why did it stop and was not able to convert the whole movie? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks in advance
Did your system hang? or is the disk space sufficient for the output of the converted file? You might also think that the conversion stopped but is still converting. Try converting overnight as 1.28GB is really a large file.
Cool – thanks and well done
Btw – Super FTW
Hi am getting an error message on the right side (Output Status) how would I know what error that is? I try to right click on it but I get nothing.. Please help… Thanks
Hi Brix, what is the exact error message that it is displaying? If its a decoding error message try putting a check in “DirectShow Decode”.
Does it show this message to other videos you have tried to convert as well? If you have a screen shot you may send it to ige.oogle@gmail.com so that I can have a look at it.
already send the file.. thanks
I’ve seen your screenshot and that error happens because of several reasons.
1. You do not have the proper codecs or the file you have contains multiple codecs Try downloading the K-Lite Codec pack which I have also written about. The link is here – K-Lite Codec Pack. Try also installing Div-X in your system. Restart your system after this. You can then try converting the file again. If the error appears again, put a check at “DirectShow Decode”.
2. Your file is damaged. If you’ve tried the solution above and it doesn’t work, try converting other files. If it is converted, then your file is really damaged.
3. The system might be low in resources. Try closing other applications when Super is encoding. Try to check if your computer has viruses or malware as well as they greatly affect performance and mess with your applications. The best way to check this is to try to convert the video file in another computer.
I hope I helped.
hi. this how-to is great. i’ve tried converting a few music vids.
however when i try to play it the file seems to have “doubled”. the first half is the ful video and audio and the latter half is just the audio of the same file.
am i doing something wrong?
That’s the first time I’ve heard that happen. Maybe something just went wrong in the encoding process. (You’ve converted it twice maybe?)
Have you tried converting it again? Maybe it would help if the only file uploaded in Super is the video you are trying to convert. And try to manually set the conversion settings (not just import).
Oh and thanks! I’m glad you found the article useful.
Awesome, i got a similar solution myself but the steps are similar, but for the multiple file merging its easier to just find the largest file(or longest) I find that most other video files are for menus and probably extra outtakes and stuff but the large bulk as 90% of people want is the main movie so if you see the file sizes and one has a dramatic increase try that and see if it works. A series of episodes can be done as i did with Scrubs is find all the files lasting 20-21 minutes(minus adds on TV remember) and just do them one by one to save time and hassle.
Hi Ige,
I’ve tried to manually set the conversion settings and it turns out the same. The regular 3 minute and 50 second video becomes a 7 minute video with no actual video in the second half.
I haven’t tried converting an actual movie though, just music videos. Maybe something’s wrong with my source files?
I even tried converting a few mp3s and with no such problem.
You are probably right. It may be a source file problem. Or it might be a problem of the converter itself as it’s not totally bug free.
gr8 job man this is step by step guide is really helpful thanx…
Thanks!
i converted a movie as per ur instructions and even saved it on my Nokia 5900.The movie played for say one hour and then it gave error cant play the file..what was the mistake
Maybe an encoding error? Try encoding it again. There may be problems in the source file itself.
how long will it take to convert a 86 mb video im sitting here for 2 hours
Hi Dylan, that would depend on your computer/machine. That shouldn’t take very long though.
great guide! for anyone having trouble with jerky playback – If you truly want super smooth video – simply encode your movies to match the 5800 screens refresh rate – 30.303hz = 30.303fps…..(not 23.976/24/25/29.97/30)
the magic number is 30.303fps – I use total video converter to do this and the results are fantastic.
Thanks xxxStarmanxxx, though I think that the best fps (frames per second) depends on the fps of your input video file. If the fps of your input video file is 29.97fps then the best setting is 29.97fps. I put 25 fps as this is the most common and is the middle value of fps most common in videos and movies today – which should result to smooth playback when your input video file is in the 23-30fps range.
Thanks for pointing that out! If anyone has trouble on playback, you can try xxxstarmanxxx’s suggestion or you may check the actual fps of your input video file and match it with the conversion settings.
I’m not talking average – quality movies! i’m talking super smooth videos that never jerk – all 23.976/24/25/29.97/30 fps movies wil display a hiccup somewhere every so seconds – its impossible not to…..the refresh rate of the screen is 30.303hz – take a look at the bundled videos that came of your card – most importantly the pop music videos – they are all encoded at 30.303fps – because nokia knows they will look superb – I really am talking super smooth panning of video shots – watch any movie/clip in any other frame rate – and the panning will crap out in seconds J.
Don’t know where did you get this strange “30.303″ number from.
All bundled videos are actually 25p, and not 30.303!
But you are right about the hiccups: for example NTSC TV-rip at 23.976 fps would jerk every second, and you MUST have it recode at 25 fps if you want to avoid the lagging.
So remember kids: encode at exactly 25 and be happy!
ok so i id all that ^^ n i think it workd
so now im getting torrents of torrent reactor. net
and saving them to my documents and then dragging and dropping where u say to but when i try to encode them it keeps coming up with error n wont finish,,, what can i do ?? what am i doing wrong ??
Hi just be sure that what you are converting are valid video files and are playable in your computer. Other than that check out my other comment which might help you – http://www.techiechips.com/convert-movies-and-videos-nokia-5800/comment-page-1/#comment-297
Hei, its sounds like a fantastic tool! Im a proud owner of a new 5800, but I use a Mac instead of Windows. Is there anyway i can make this work, or is there a substitute software i could use? Thanks.
Hi Rags,
Thanks for your question, why don’t you subscribe to my email updates or RSS feed? I’ll SOON post a guide on how to convert videos using MAC OS. Thanks!
Hi again Rags,
I’ve made an article on how to convert videos and movies for Nokia 5800 under the MAC OS. Check it out and I hope it helps you!
hi!! im trying to convert a video. the input is 140 mb only and the output is still loading and it reaches 180 mb now and still in progress. is there a confirmation message that will appear when the its done?
Hi Stacy,
If I remember correctly it would just stop and the message when it encodes – “NOW ENCODING FILE” would disappear. If the file size of the video has become bigger than your source file, play with the Video Bitrate settings. Try to lower it (maybe like 384kbps) and see if the results are good.
Hi
I just had to post a reply to this, I had been looking for the past couple of weeks for something like this and armed with zero knowledge came unstuck more than once and had almost given up.
The guide, the software and in particular the settings file are invaluable, thanks very much Ige!
Glen
Thanks Glen! It’s gratitude like this that make me want to continue posting useful guides and tips. Again thank you for the appreciation!
Nice tutorial. I can convert the vids fine, they play flawlessly on my pc. The problem I’m having is tranfering them onto my phone. I havent been able to play a movie yet (around 700megs) I have managed to play some smaller files, a few episodes of weeds played ok, but after a while I get an “invalid clip. operation cancelled” notice. Anyone know why this is??
Thanks
RS
I think I’ve answered my own question lol. In case anyone else has similar problems, I formatted the card. The card came with a whole load of crap on it, I backed up what I wanted to keep which was basically just the maps for nokia maps and a few pics. Now it’s formatted the movies playback nicely
so far at least…
I’m glad you got it working. Sorry I wasn’t able to reply sooner. Thanks for posting the solution that you got!
I have encoded the movie, but i don’t know what to do know? there is nothing sign or anything… How to send a movi to my mobile? I even don’t know where the file is? =/
OK,it works. Great, tnx for that… I have only one question, do you know how to upload subtitutles in the movie?
Sorry to say but I don’t know how to put subtitles in a video. I’ll post it here if I find one.
Thanks a lot for this guide!
Dude the software is great and all but it takes hours and hours to convert, can you tell me some way to speed up the process.????
Hi Candy,
Try lowering the bitrate to 720kbps. The video still looks good and it cuts the conversion process by one-third.
Lowering the bitrate would result to a faster conversion but would result to a lower quality video. If 720kbps still converts slow for you, try lowering it a little more – I can’t promise the video would look good though.
thanx a million, this is just perfect.
viva la resistance!
thank you so much !!
Viva la resistance ♥ jajaja
this software rockzz..itz da perfect converter..thnxxx alot!!!!!
Thanks for the tips, can SUPER put the subtitle as well?
Unfortunately, I can’t help you on how to put subtitles. Why don’t you subscribe to the free feed? I might be able to find sometime a good software that can do that. Thanks!
Thank you soooo much!!!!\^w^/
I really appreciate this article. I’ve just watched an episode of my favorite TV series on my device, with perfect quality, thanks to your instructions. Brilliant!
Hi IGE, first of all thank u very much for that wonderful piece of software u gave us.
I have downloaded it n all its components successfully.I have even successfully encoded a music video and can play it on my nokia 5800.
But the second one i tried to encode,it says at the bottom’an error has occured’.I read the note,n i tried to use the software with directshow decode ticked and also unticked but nothing is working out now.
Reading the forum,i also downloaded the klcodec and uninstall the divx i had,but in vain.
CAN YOU PLEASE HELP MATE!!!!!!!
What kind of file are you converting? There must be something wrong with the file. Perhaps the file contains multiple codecs.
Hi they are all AVI file im trying to convert. The first one im trying to convert is an AVI file and it converted successfully and the second and the rest also is the same format,i.e AVI file.
It does look that there is something wrong about the direct active decode something.Probably you could tell me how to activate or deactivate Activex control on my PC.
Hi safraaz,
The makers of Super Video Converter recommend that for us to use DirectShow Decode, HaaliMatroskaSplitter and ffdshow should be installed. Try installing the two and then check the DirectShow Decode in Super when converting your files.
If your file still doesn’t work then I can no longer help you. Although I do hope it works though!
Thanks!
Hello i just found that
Hey, thanks a lot for this one!
)
No problem Kurvs, Glad I helped!
Great guide, and easy to follow, thanks
But one thing.. where are i supposed to put the video file in?
Sorry, first time doing this.
Hi HoX,
Just drag and drop any video file to Super Video Converter.
Thanks!
Hi am getting an error message every time I try to convert any file. Ive tried flv and avi files and always get an error code about DirectShow being used by another programme. I’ve installed K-Lite, HaaliMatroskaSplitter and ffdshow plus ticked and un-ticked DirectShow Decode. I’ve also tried un-installing DivX but no luck. Please help… Thanks
Hi Chris C,
Does this apply to all your files?
The only explanation I can offer you is that the file you may be converting have multiple codecs in it. Or there may be a problem in your file (which you don’t experience because it plays fine).
Getting a different copy of the file might solve your problem.
SWEET AND SIMPLE.Thanks mate
Hi, I will be getting the Nokia 5800 in the next few days, wanting to know what size are the movies?. I was thinking of using smartmovies as they are around the 200mb mark. are these the same using this progarm? many thanks
Hi Ricky,
The size of the movies are in 640×360 (width x height). I am unfamiliar with smartmovies but if they are just another video format then if you convert these video/movie files using Super Video Converter for the Nokia 5800, I’m confident it will work.
thank you so much! now i can watch anime on my phone ^_^
one question, if i convert a video and i set the bitrate for audio/video higher than it actually is, will the quality go up or will it just stay as the original bitrate quality even though the file is bigger?
Hi eugenius,
If I understand your question correctly, the quality will just stay as the original bitrate. If you set the bitrate of the audio/video higher than that of the original file, the quality would only go as high as the original video and cannot exceed its quality.
Glad I helped you in your video conversion for your Nokia 5800!
thank you!
i seem to have a problem with converting, say after a few video conversions it works, then i dont use the program for a few hours and use it again, it gets an error whilst converting, its fine after i reinstalled the program but then it happens again, and its not the video file cos that worked fine, is there any way of getting around this without reinstalling it eveery time i use the program?
also if i convert a 4:3 file into 16:9 but dont want it to stretch sideways but have black bars other side of the vid, how can i do this?
many thanks
That has never happened to me. Maybe it’s a memory problem? Maybe a restart of the computer is all is needed.
The stretch is barely noticeable as I’ve converted a 4:3 video with the settings indicated. But if you really want to, try forcing a 4:3 by indicating it at the Aspect setting. After you indicate 640:360 as the Video Scale Size, choose or force 4:3 as the Aspect. Super will “try” to preserve the 4:3 setting of your original video file.
Hi,
What program do i need to use to convert/rip my dvd into the correct files so that i can drag and drop on to super?
Many thanks
Chris
You can just go to the Video_TS folder of your DVD and copy the .VOB files to your hard drive. You can then drag these .VOB files to Super so you can convert them.
This is what I did when I converted the DVD of my sister’s wedding to her mobile.
Hi Ige,
I tried as you said but when i copied them to my desktop it said, Cannot copy VTS_01_1: Data error (cyclic redundancy check) i tried a few times and just doing it with individual files but i got the same result, any ideas?
Thanks Chris
Hi Chris,
A Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is done to ensure that the data is still good when being transferred. Thus, if a CRC error occurs it means that the data that was transferred is damaged.
This doesn’t mean immediately that the original file is damaged. Most of the time something just went wrong during transfer – especially wehn transferring from CDs or DVDs. What you can do is try to transfer the file again. Try ejecting the disc and reinsert it. Check the disc if its dirty as well or if it has lots of scratches.
If it still occurs, there might be wrong with the disc itself which could have damaged the file (like scratches). You might still be able to play it but you can’t copy the file.
tax man..that is awesome…tanx!!i removed smartmovie :*
Nice Guide,
BUT pls remove the output-folder settings from ur file
so i set the outputfolder load ur settings and my output settings are gone
Hi Drudatz,
Sorry but I can’t remove the Output folder Settings. Even if what I save is just the default Output folder settings, what you will get are the default ones once you save them. It’s just a limitation in the software.
What you can do is just manually input the settings I’ve indicated and then save them into a file so that what you have are the Nokia 5800 video conversion settings with your own output folder. That way, you won’t have to use my settings file and you can use yours instead.
Hi
what’s wrong???!? Is it Completely downloaded?
I have no Encode (Active Files) button
Make sure you were able to successfully drag and drop a video file to Super Video Converter. Make sure as well that the file has a check on the checkbox beside it. If you did both, you should be able to see the Encode (Active Files) button and you should be able to click it.
Make sure you meet the requirements of Super Video Converter as well, specifically the screen size. If you use UMPC or Netbooks like Acer Aspire One or ASUS EEE PCs, you have to adjust the screen resolution or else the user interface of Super Video Converter won’t all be seen (it will be cut-off just above the Encode (Active Files)).
Why is it every time i do it
at the bottom it says ”An Error has occurred ??
Need Help Pleas .
Hi John,
I can offer a few explanations:
1. You do not have the proper codecs or the file you have contains multiple codecs. Try downloading the HaaliMatroskaSplitter and ffdshow which the makers of Super Video Converter recommends. Try also installing Div-X in your system. Restart your system after this. You can then try converting the file again. If the error appears again, put a check at “DirectShow Decode”. If an error occurs again, try downloading K-Lite Codec pack which I have also written about. The link is here – K-Lite Codec Pack. Try converting again with and without a check on “DirectShow Decode”
Thanx a lot..
It was of great help..
U solved my problem…
The software works very good!!!!
Great!
Hi I haved followed the instructions stated but getting the following error message when trying to view, “no combination of filters could be found to render the stream” on video or audio, what have i done wrong?
I have not encountered an error like that when converting using Super but it may be that your file has multiple codecs in it. Try downloading the HaaliMatroskaSplitter and ffdshow which the makers of Super Video Converter recommends.
This guide really helped me! I thank the creator Ige for making somethign simple that can really help me enjoy my new 5800XM.
Thanks a lot for solving my problem, now i can convert my files!!!
Hi there, It’s been a very useful guide and i’ve followed all the steps but I am still unable to get it working. I try using the output and the 3GP and it encodes but it is very average quality. But when i try use this it doesn’t work. It comes up with the error has occured and it just informs me of the most common possible reasons for the error e.g the directshot decode not being checked, informing me on some formats that are not allowed or my input may be damaged. I have installed both the HaaliMatroskaSplitter and ffdshow.
Could you pleeeeeeease help?
Thanks
Hi James,
Try installing the K-Lite Video Pack which I have featured in this site as well.
Could you also try a different file? If that doesn’t work, could you try another computer? I would just like to isolate the problem so I could be of more help.
Thanks!
