Since the release of the Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 mini since June 2009 and September 2009, the two have been a hit. Because of its good features (and good looks & ergonomics), I’ve seen many of my techie friends buy the N97 and N97 mini. Their price may be higher than other phones, but it’s all compensated with the performance and features that they have.

With the a big 3.5 inch screen for the N97 and a smaller (but still big) 3.2 inch screen for the N97 mini, it would be great to watch videos and movies in it. These cute Stormtroopers even use it as their spaceship console monitor!

Converting Videos and Movies for the N97 and N97 Mini

I’ll show you how to convert videos and/or movies so you can play it in full screen on your Nokia N97 or N97 Mini. Note that they don’t have separate conversion settings so whatever would play in full screen with the N97, would also play for the N97 mini, and vice versa.

Super Video Converter

Let’s now use Super Video Converter to convert our videos and movies. If you’re not familiar with Super Video Converter or have not yet installed it in your computer, I suggest you first read my other article – How to Use Super Video Converter. It would help you get familiarized with Super Video Converter and the download link is also located there.

Once you know how to use Super and have already installed it in your computer, you can use the conversion settings below to convert your video/movie for the Nokia N97 and N97 Mini.

The Nokia N97 and N97 mini can surely handle more than 720 Kbps of video bitrate that we specified so feel free to increase this to increase the quality of the converted video. However, if you feel conversion is slow, feel free to decrease the video bitrate but take note you’ll be decreasing the quality of the converted video as well.

If you have problems with unsynchronized audio and video, you can modify the video frame rate into a higher or lower specification. But to be absolutely sure, you can check the frame rate of the source video file by double-clicking on the source video file which you added in Super. A new window would appear at the right where you can take not of the Frame Rate under the Video category. You can use this setting to replace the Video Frame/Sec setting above.

MediaCoder Transcoder

If you don’t like Super or you encounter problems with it, we can use MediaCoder Transcoder to convert our videos. If you don’t have it in your computer or don’t know how to use it, I suggest you first read the article, How to Use MediaCoder. The download link of installer of MediaCoder is also there.

Once you know how to use MediaCoder and have installed it in your computer, you can use the settings below to convert your videos/movies for the Nokia N97 and N97 mini.

If you entered the correct settings, the summary should look like the following:

If the converted video has no sound, modify the audio conversion setting to look like this:

Note: If the converted video file is larger than the source file, check the video bitrate of the source file. If it’s smaller than 720kbps then set it to that number. For example, if the original video bitrate is just 500kbps, then replace 720 with 500 in the video settings. You can check for the video bitrate of the source file by clicking at the source file in MediaCoder and then checking the properties window located at the right.

Videora Nokia N97 Video Converter

If you want to quickly convert videos and you’re not that particular with video settings, you can use Videora’s Nokia N97 Video Converter. It may not be as flexible in terms of settings as the two converters above, but it’s very easy to use.

As we are now using MediaCoder in our video conversion guides for our gadgets (i.e. mobile phones), I have made a general tutorial on how to use MediaCoder . This would help novice and first time users in using the software.

Why Use MediaCoder?

MediaCoder when first launched or opened, looks like it’s difficult to use because of the several panes, tabs, icons, and buttons of the software. Although video conversion is not an easy task in itself, these could confuse the user and divert his/her attention on the few core steps needed to convert their videos.

However, these several buttons and icons are there because MediaCoder has powerful conversion features which we can take advantage of. MediaCoder can be used to convert almost any video format into another with the specifications we want which makes it ideal for our video conversion needs. 

Using MediaCoder is actually very easy to use once we know the fundamental steps on converting videos (as mentioned above). After this guide, I’m pretty sure with just a few uses, you’ll want to get more out of your video conversion and use these “confusing” buttons and icons.

Download and Install MediaCoder

MediaCoder can be downloaded from their official website at www.mediacoderhq.com. Just follow the link I’ve just provided and it would take you to their official download page. Be sure to download the MediaCoder Full Edition. Be sure to choose as well the right kind of installation file for your system (if 32-bit or 64-bit). If you’re unsure what kind of installation to use, you can safely choose the 32-bit installation as it works for the 64-bit as well.

If for some reason, you can’t find the download link from their site (as it’s sometimes hard to find), I’ve uploaded the installation files myself. MediaCoder would update you if you if an update is available.

MediaCoder will need an active Internet connection while installing as it will still download the necessary files for it to work.

How to Use MediaCoder Transcoder

1. Open or Launch MediaCoder Transcoder

Below is what you should see when you open MediaCoder.

When you don’t immediately see the screenshot above when you open MediaCoder, check your taskbar and click the MediaCoder icon.

2. Add the File for Conversion

Using the “Add” icon in the upper left corner, you can add a video file you want to convert, or even select multiple files for conversion.

Alternatively, you can just drag and drop files into the upper left pane to add files for conversion (highlighted with a red box below)

Once you’ve successfully added a file for conversion, it should be listed like below:

3. Locate the Settings Tabs

For lack of a better term, I just named the place where you would enter the specifications or settings for conversion as the “Settings Tabs” (as it consists of various tabs). It’s located at the middle left portion. It’s highlighted with a red box in the screenshot below.

Each tab consists of various conversion settings specific for a certain function. Every time something is changed on the Settings Tabs, the “Summary” located at the right side would show it.

4. Indicate the Conversion Settings

Since we already know that the Settings Tabs is where we need to specify the conversion settings, we just need to indicate the specific conversion settings for it to be playable on your gadget.

5. Start Converting your Video or Movie

Once you’ve finished specifying the conversion settings just click on the Start Icon located at the top right to start converting your video.

Note: The converted or output video file is saved at the same folder of the source file by default. If you want to change it, just go to the General tab at the “Settings Tabs” mentioned earlier to choose a different folder.

There you have it! I’ve just showed you how to use MediaCoder to convert your videos. Just wait for your video to be fully converted and then transfer it to your gadget and it can now be played there. It’s really very easy and I’m sure you’ll be converting like a pro in no time.

Almost any gadget today, whether it’s portable or not, is able to carry and play video. Mobile phones are sometimes gauged on the extra features they bring which include video playback and video recording. iPods and iPhones are not just known for their great music and nice user interface but also for the clear video they bring.

However, as there are numerous video file types out there today, we often discover that we can’t play a certain video or movie that we like in some of our gadgets. We would need to convert them into playable file types by our gadgets.

That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the best free video converters out there today. You can use these applications to convert almost any known video file into another format that your device or gadget can play. (Be sure to check this page from time to time as we would be regularly updating this page for new video conversion software. You may also subscribe to the RSS feed or email updates – its free!)
 

1. Super Video Converter

This comes as no surprise as we have been using this software in the site for quite some time now. What’s good about Super is that it can convert almost any video file into another format while laying out all the conversion options in the screen.

It gives you freedom to indicate the video scale size, ratio, bitrate and other options that you won’t find in other conversion software. It can be downloaded from its official website eRightsoft or from the guide I’ve already made on how to use Super Video Converter (just follow the link).

2. MediaCoder

MediaCoder is also highly recommended because it supports various formats and is very fast in converting videos. It looks more difficult to use than Super but with just a few uses, it’s actually very easy to use

It’s very flexible in video conversion as you can set the video aspect size, display aspect ratio, pixel aspect ratio, and various other options. I’ve already made a general guide on how to use MediaCoder. The download link is also located there.

3. Format Factory

Format Factory like Super and MediaCoder supports various kinds of video formats. Some say they like Format Factory because it’s easier to use than Super and MediaCoder. However, I think Format Factory’s advantage is that it converts faster than Super does (although MediaCoder is faster), and looks more simple to use than MediaCoder. If for some reason you can’t make Super and MediaCoder work, Format Factory is a good alternative.

4. Video Converters from Videora

The converters from Videora are the easiest to use compared from Super and Format Factory. It guides you every step of the way from choosing the video file you want to convert up to the quality of the converted video.

The only downside is that Videora’s converters are not as customizable as Super and Format Factory are. It also needs different converters for different kinds of gadgets. Their most famous (and what I think is their best video converter) is the Videora iPod Converter.

With the success of the Nokia 5800, Nokia has released another phone much like it but with a lower price tag – the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. Unlike the Nokia 5800, the Nokia 5530 doesn’t have 3G, has no GPS, and has a smaller screen (from 3.2 inches to 2.9 inches). Despite this, the Nokia 5530 is still a great phone as it is sleeker, cheaper and packs all the other good features of the Nokia 5800.

And like the Nokia 5800, the Nokia 5530 is great for watching movies and videos as well. Let’s now try to convert videos and movies for the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic.

Below are three video conversion applications we can use to convert videos and movies for the Nokia 5530.

Super Video Converter

If you’re going to use Super Video Converter to convert videos and movies, I suggest that you first read How to Use Super Video Converter. The download link of the installer of Super Video Converter is also there.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Super (and know how to use it), use the conversion settings below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic.

I’m pretty sure that the Nokia 5530 can handle more than the 816kbps video bitrate that we specified so feel free to make this higher to increase the quality of the converted video. If conversion is too long for you or the converted video file is larger than the source video file, you can decrease the video bitrate from 816kbps (take note that you’ll be decreasing the video quality as well).

If you find that audio and video are not synchronized, you can check the frame rate of the source video file by double-clicking the source video file which you added in Super. A new window would appear at the right. Take note of the Frame rate under the Video category. You can use this setting to replace the Video Frame/Sec setting above.

You can increase the audio bitrate as well to increase the audio quality if you want.

MediaCoder Transcoder

MediaCoder is another video converter which is as powerful and as flexible as Super. If you encounter problems using Super you can use MediaCoder instead.

I suggest that you first read How to Use MediaCoder if this is your first time to use this. You will also find the download link of MediaCoder there.

Once you’ve installed MediaCoder (and know how to use it) Just use the conversion settings in the screenshots below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia 5530.

If you’ve entered the correct settings, the summary should show the following:

Note: If the converted file is larger than the source file, try to check the video bitrate of the source file if it’s smaller than the 816kbps. If it is, set it to that number. So if the video bitrate of the source file is just 500kbps, in the conversion settings above, replace 816 with 500. You can check for the video bitrate of the source file by clicking at the source file in MediaCoder and then checking the properties window located at its right.

Videora Nokia 5530 Video Converter

If you just want to quickly convert videos for your Nokia 5530 and don’t want to think about conversion settings much, you can use Videora’s Nokia 5530 Video Converter. It’s not as flexible as the two mentioned earlier (in terms of video quality, file size, aspect ratio, etc.) but it’s the easiest to use!

The Samsung Omnia is a great touch screen phone powered by Windows Mobile 6. It’s a phone which more than lives up to the standards of smartphones today. Being a person who likes movies, I immediately noticed the great multimedia capabilities of the Samsung Omnia. It may be a smartphone and not a multimedia phone but the multiple video formats it can play especially DivX, make it great for playing videos and movies.

However, it does take a little step back in terms of the display. Compared to the Nokia 5800 which can display up to 16M colors, it can only display up to 256K colors. It’s understandable though as the market of both phones is different – the Nokia 5800 is a multimedia phone and the Samsung Omnia is a smartphone.

Display color aside, the Samsung Omnia is still great at playing movies and videos. It comes preloaded with a trailer of the movie Kung Fu Panda.

As the Samsung Omnia supports multiple formats like DivX, AVI, ASF, etc. converting videos for the Samsung Omnia would not be as difficult.

There are two ways to convert your movies or videos for the Samsung Omnia. Both are effective in converting videos and would just be a matter of what your preference will be.

DivX Converter

DivX offers a free converter of videos to a DivX format suitable for your mobile phone. It’s a very easy to use program and is also light in resources. It is available for download in two versions – DivX converter for mobile in Windows and Div converter for mobile in Mac.

When you run DivX converter for mobile, you’ll see a small user interface.

To convert your videos/movies for the Samsung Omnia using the DivX converter for mobile:

1. Drag and Drop the Video to the DivX Converter

To select the video you want to convert you just need to drag and drop your video file to the DivX converter. Once you’ve done this, DivX converter should state that there is a file in queue.

2. Indicate the Conversion Setting

Be sure to indicate 400×240 as the setting for conversion and NOT mobile or qmobile. Click the arrow buttons to change the settings.

3. Convert the Video File

Click Convert and it would now convert your video or movie to DivX format which is suitable for your Samsung Omnia. Once complete a new window would pop up informing you that conversion has been successful. Click on View Files to see where the converted file has been saved.

Just transfer the converted video to your Samsung Omnia and you would now be able to play the video on your phone.

Super Video Converter

If for some reason the DivX converter for mobile doesn’t work, you could try using Super Video Converter. Super is a little more complicated to use than the DivX converter.

I suggest you read first How to Use Super Video Converter. The download link of Super is also there.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Super (and know how to use it), use the conversion settings below so you can convert your videos and movies for the Samsung Omnia.

When you’ve clicked “Encode (Active Files)” a pop-up would appear asking you another question. Just choose DX50 and then click OK and Super would now convert your video file.

That’s it! Those are the two ways to be able to convert videos and movies for the Samsung Omnia.

You can convert from almost any kind video format, and then convert it to another format with a different aspect ratio, video bitrate, aspect size, etc.

As we use Super Video Converter in almost all of them, I decided that it’s time to make a general tutorial on how to use Super Video Converter so that I don’t repeat them on every video conversion article I make.

Download and Install Super Video Converter

You could download the latest Super Video Converter in their official website eRightSoft. However it’s very hard to find the download link at their official website as it’s buried several pages deep. I’ve provided the download link for the latest Super Video Converter below. I’ve also included previous versions of the converter as some people are having a hard time converting with the new one.

Super Video Converter comes with an automatic upgrade. I however suggest that you fully uninstall any previous versions of Super first and then install the latest version.

Using Super Video Converter

The guide below is for the latest Super Video Converter. Previous versions may be a little different but the basics remain the same.

1. Launch Super Video Converter

Once it’s successfully installed, just double-click the shortcut icon at your desktop and then this is what you should see.

If you don’t see a similar screen when you launch Super, make sure the first option at the upper-left corner of the screen is selected – as seen in the screenshot below.

2. Select the Video You Want to Convert

Drag the video file you would want to convert, on the area where it says “DROP A VALID MULTIMEDIA FILE HERE”.

Once you’ve successfully dragged the file you want to convert to Super, it should be listed and have a checkmark beside it like the one below:

3. Indicate the Conversion Settings

This is where you enter the conversion settings for your gadget (mobile phone, video player, etc.). Below is a list of all the video conversion guides I’ve made which uses Super Video Converter.

5. Encode /Convert your Video or Movie

Click Encode (Active Files) which is located at the bottom, and just wait for your file to be encoded. The longer the video or the movie is, the longer the encoding process.

Note: If you have the latest Super Video Converter, it would save the converted video in the same folder where the source video is. However, if you’re using Super Video Converter build 35 and lower, you need to set the folder where the converted videos are. You can do this by pressing Ctrl+T or by right-clicking any part of Super and choosing Output File Management. The default location where it saves converted videos is “C:\Program Files\eRightSoft\Super\OutPut”

Also while converting, Super displays a green bar to show the progress of conversion.

Sometimes it goes full and then resets back to empty (especially on large files). You might think that there’s something wrong with the conversion but there really isn’t. Just let it convert until it’s finished.

The Nokia E75 is another good business phone like the E71 and the E90. Like the two, it sports a large screen and a decent display for watching movies and videos. Combining it with the included 4GB microSD (you can put a microSD of up to 16GB) you can store and watch multiple movies and TV episodes in the Nokia E75.

Let’s now convert movies and videos for the Nokia E75.

Below are two video conversion applications we can use to convert videos and movies for the Nokia E75.

Super Video Converter

If you’re going to use Super Video Converter to convert videos and movies, I suggest that you first read How to Use Super Video Converter. The download link for the installer of Super Video Converter is also there.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Super (and know how to use it), use the conversion settings below to convert your video or movie for the Nokia E75.

There are two sets of conversion settings for the Nokia E75, one for widescreen videos, and the other is for non-widescreen. Non-widescreen videos have an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 or an aspect size of 320×240. Widescreen videos have aspect ratios ranging from 1.77:1 to 2.77:1.

You just need to watch the original video you are going to convert to see if its widescreen or not. Once you know what kind of video it is, just apply the settings below. (Note: I’ve noticed that most movies are in widescreen format.)

a. For Non-Widescreen Videos

For non-widescreen video formats your Super settings should look like the one below:

MediaCoder is another converter which can be used for the Nokia E75. If you encounter problems using Super you can use MediaCoder instead.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Super (and know how to use it), use the conversion settings below to convert your video or movie for the Sony Ericsson G705.

a. Conversion Settings for non-Widescreen Videos or Movies

You should use these settings when you are converting videos or movies which are in non-widescreen format. You should be able to differentiate a widescreen video or movie from a non-widescreen video or movie by simply watching it.

The settings in the screenshot are:

Output File: mp4
Output Video Codec: mpeg-4
Output Audio Codec: AAC LC

Video General Options: Both unchecked
Video Scale Size: 320×240
Video Aspect: 4:3
Video Frame/Sec: 25
Video Bitrate: 384

b. Conversion Settings for Widescreen Videos or Movies

Use these settings when you are converting widescreen videos.

The settings in the screenshot are:

Output File: mp4
Output Video Codec: mpeg-4
Output Audio Codec: AAC LC

Video General Options: Both unchecked
Video Scale Size: 320×176
Video Aspect: 16:9
Video Frame/Sec: 25
Video Bitrate: 384
Video Other Options: “High Quality” and “48k Audio” are checked

Audio Bitrate: 112
DVD Language Select: default

If you notice that the audio and video aren’t synchronized, check the frame rate of source video by double-clicking the source video file in Super. A new window would appear at the right where you can check the Frame rate under the Video Category. You can use this setting to replace the Video Frame/Sec setting above.

MediaCoder Transcoder

MediaCoder is another converter which can be used for Sony Ericsson G705. If you encounter problems using Super you can use MediaCoder instead. I suggest that you first read How to Use MediaCoder if this is your first time to use this. You will also find the download link of MediaCoder there.

Once you’ve installed MediaCoder (and know how to use it) Just use the conversion settings in the screenshots below to convert your video or movie for Sony Ericsson G705.

Non-Widescreen Videos

If you’ve entered the correct settings, the summary should show the following:

Widescreen Videos

For widescreen videos, you will still use the settings above but change the settings in the Picture Tab.

For the iPod Touch and the Apple iPhone, we’ll be using the Videora iPod Touch Converter which is made by Red Kawa. Conversion would be easy as Videora is very user-friendly. Moreover, the Videora Converter was really made for Apple iPod products.

Download and Install Videora iPod Touch Converter

First we need to download the Videora iPod Touch Converter by Red Kawa. We won’t need any other video converter for the iPhone as we can use this one. More of this would be explained later.

Steps for Video Conversion for iPod Touch and iPhone

1. Open or Launch Videora iPod Touch Converter

When you open Videora while you are connected to the internet (Online mode), it will show a different user interface than when you are NOT connected to the internet (Offline mode).

This is what you will see when you open Videora when you are in Online mode (or when you are connected to the internet):

Notice the advertisements at the top and at the bottom right? (The Audioro and Ringtonesia)

When you are using it in Offline mode, (or when you are not connected to the internet) you will first encounter the setup window. The setup window looks like this:

Notice at the left side of the window, it tells you to pick your Apple device? Just leave it be and just click Finish at the bottom right.

It would then take you to the same page as when you are in Online mode minus the advertisements.

2. Go to the Convert Video page

Whether we’re in Online mode or Offline mode in Videora, the video conversion process remains the same. Just click on Convert then click Video File located at the top.

When you’re in Online mode, you will be asked to choose between Normal mode and Power mode. Choose Power Mode.

When you’re in Offline mode, the only choice that will be available will be Power mode, so just click it.

3. Input the Conversion Details

Once you are in Power mode the lower left pane would look like this.

You need to select first the file you want to convert. You can do this by clicking on Select File and choosing the file.

You then need to specify where the converted videos would be saved. You can do this by clicking on Browse and selecting the appropriate location where you want to save the converted file.

You then specify the title of the output file in the Title text box.

After that, you just need to select iPod Touch (2nd Generation) in the drop-down box beside Device if you are converting videos for the iPod Touch. If you are converting videos for the Apple iPhone 2G or iPhone 3G, select iPhone 2G or iPhone 3G. The Profile drop-down box would then automatically select the appropriate profile for your device so you don’t need to change or choose the profile anymore.

Thus, you won’t need another converter for the iPhone 2G or iPhone 3G.

4. Convert your Video/Movie File

Just click Start Converting located at the lower right portion and then wait for the conversion process to finish.

After that, just transfer the video file to your iPod Touch or iPhone 2G or iPhone 3G.

That’s it! You have now converted a video or movie file for your iPod Touch or iPhone 2G / iPhone 3G!

Whenever my family or friends and I have a gathering, we usually record videos using our video recorders or digital cameras. What I usually do after, is just share the video file to them and let them play the file on their own. Most of my relatives though (especially my parents, uncles and aunts), can’t figure out how to play it in a computer – providing they have one or know how to turn it on. I’m sure most of you have dilemmas similar to this as well.

I then thought that, what if I just share it through DVD? Every one of them has a DVD player and they just need to insert the disc to be able to play it. I then converted all my family related videos to DVD video files and burned them to a DVD disc so that even my grandmother who has a DVD can play it.

Here is a step by step guide on how I was able to convert any video or movie file for DVD players.

1. Download and Install Super Video Converter

We’ll be using Super Video Converter to convert videos and movies so I suggest that you first read How to Use Super Video Converter. The download link for the installer of Super Video Converter is also there.

2. Input the Conversion Settings

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Super (and know how to use it), use the conversion settings below to convert your video or movie for DVD players.

Output Container: Automode VCD, SVCD, DVD

Preset Profile
Target: DVD
Audience: PAL

A prompt would appear asking you of the naming convention to be used. Choose Use the standard DVD compliant format VTS_nn_n.VOB and then click OK.

3. Burn or Transfer to DVD

Once conversion is complete, you should now have a file most likely to have a name of VTS_01_0.VOB. We would now use Nero to burn or transfer it to a DVD and at the same time making it DVD player compatible.

For the succeeding steps below, you would need a DVD-writer and a DVD-writing software like Nero. Most DVD-writers are already bundled with the Nero software so if you have a DVD-writer you would most likely have this software.

a. Insert a blank DVD to your DVD-writer and then open Nero through Nero Startsmart. Choose Burn DVD-Video Files

b. A new window would appear. Just add the video file you converted by using the Add button on the right and then searching for your file; or you can simply drag and drop the already converted video file to the Nero window. Your file should be listed like below.

c. Click Next at the bottom right and you would be presented by another window asking you the name of the disc. Input any name you want

d. Click Burn at the lower right corner of the window.

e. If the DVD-Video files compliance test fails as shown below, ignore it and continue by pressing Ok.

f. Another warning would pop-up. Just press Yes to continue.

Your computer would now start burning the video file you made. Just wait for it to finish and you would now have converted your video or movie file for DVD players. Note however, that the success rate of DVD burning also depends on the DVD disc you are using. Some of the DVDs you will burn would be unplayable. If in case that happends try to burn it again as the problem is most likely the actual DVD disc. It had happenned to me before and the solution was just to burn it again using another DVD.
