Activate Your Iphone 3G

Do you have a new Iphone 3G or you’ve just reset it? Inserted your SIM and it doesn’t work and says locked SIM? Here’s a step-by-step guide on activating it.

If you happen to have an Iphone 3G and inserting a SIM card doesn’t make it work, then you might not have activated it. The Iphone 3G is not your regular phone where you just plug in your SIM and it’s ready to go. Remember it’s an IPOD and phone rolled into one.

Let’s first install your SIM card into your Iphone 3G. You just need to use the small metal pin provided by Apple, and use it to push at the small hole located at the top of the Iphone 3G to reveal the SIM card slot.

Activate iPhone 3G graphic0

Place the SIM card in the slot and push it back to the iPhone 3G. Once you do that, turn on the Iphone by pressing at the button near the SIM card slot. (Sometimes it would automatically turn on)

Now if you didn’t insert a SIM card or you improperly put it in, you’ll be presented with a screen like this.

Activate iPhone 3G graphic1

Notice how the iPhone 3g says SIM locked and that you need to insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate the Iphone? This is kind of misleading because if you improperly put in a SIM card and then powered it on, you might think something is wrong with your iPhone or it’s not unlocked for your SIM.

So make sure that you inserted the SIM card correctly and pushed the slot back in place. Once you do that and it’s powered on, you won’t see the SIM locked alert as seen above. You’ll just see the “connect to iTunes” image.

Now let’s download and install the latest iTunes from Apple. You can download it here.

Activate the Iphone 3G

Once you’ve done the preliminaries above, it’s now time to activate your iPhone.

Connect your iPhone 3G to your computer using the provided USB cable. Once its connected to your PC, it would detect the connected iPhone and automatically start iTunes.

Once iTunes starts, it would detect the carrier settings of your iPhone 3G and prompt you to download the latest one.

Activate iPhone 3G graphic2

Just click on “Download and Update”.

The process of updating your carrier settings is quick, so once it’s finished just click “OK”.

Activate iPhone 3G graphic3

You only need to follow the steps up to here to successfully activate the iPhone 3G. But I strongly suggest that you continue with the additional steps below to make the performance of your iPhone 3G better.

You’ll be presented with a screen like the one below after the carrier settings update.

Activate iPhone 3G graphic4

If your screen doesn’t look like this one, just make sure that you click on “iPhone” on the left Pane which is under Devices category as shown below.

Activate iPhone 3G graphic5

Just click “Register Later”. If you click “Continue”, you’ll be registering your iPhone 3G and need to create an Apple account.

(We’ll keep this guide as simple as possible so I won’t be showing you how to register your iPhone as this isn’t really a pre-requisite.)

Activate iPhone 3G graphic6

Once you click “Register Later”, you’ll be presented with the screen below. (Make sure you click your iPhone at the Devices category at the left pane)

Activate iPhone 3G graphic7

Just type in what name you would want for your iPhone 3G. I put in the name of Sam. (it’s his iPhone I’m using anyway)

Activate iPhone 3G graphic8

Once you’re finished, just click “Done”.

If your iPhone 3G is new, I’m sure it needs a software upgrade. If it does, you’ll be presented with the screen below. Just click “Update”.

Activate iPhone 3G graphic9

Just be prepared to wait as the download is about 200-250MB. Once the download is complete it would automatically update your iPhone 3G to the latest software. Remember not to unplug your iPhone 3G once it’s being updated.

That’s it! We did more than just activate the iPhone 3G. We upgraded your iPhone and made it ready for iTunes so you can transfer music, videos, and photos just like a regular iPod.

Your activated iPhone 3G should now look like this.

Activate iPhone 3G graphic10

  1. Charlie says:

i bought my iphone on ebay and is supposedly unlocked, the person who sold it to me had use it before and the idiot forgot to send the phone without all his info.
Do i have to reset the phone to its originals? or can i just follow the steps here and be ok? it has pics and music and it works perfectly with Wi-Fi and applications but not as a phone so i was wondering what should i do in order to make it work.
    Thank you very much

  2. Ige says:

@Charlie: When you put in your SIM card what does it say? The indicated steps here are for unactivated and reset iPhones. If you reset it to its originals you’ll definitely need to do the steps here.

  3. antonio says:

i have an iphone 3g and all the normal uses of the iphone work apart from being able to call, due to it being unactivated ive reset it many times ive even tried to jailbreak it but it still isnt activated. how would i be able to activate it please reply asap

  4. Ige says:

@antonio: Is your SIM / number activated already? You should check with your network. It seems the problem isn’t with your iPhone. Try to put your SIM in a different phone and see if it works. If it doesn’t then its your SIM / number which doesn’t work. You should check with your operator. If it does work, are you sure your iPhone isn’t locked?

Another case that I can think of is that if your iPhone isnt SIM based. Your mobile operator might not just have activated your number yet. You might need to call a certain number to be able to activate your service.

  5. Obed says:

Hi there, my friend is selling me his brand new iphone for a cheep price, he’s problem regarding his iphone is its still not activated.

Is it possible to activate the iphone using this steps? He brought it in the USA and im going to try this method here in the Philippines my network will be Globe Telecom PH.

    Hoping for your fast reply.

    Thanks

    -obed c.

    • Ige says:

Hi Obed, yes you can activate your iPhone using these steps but make sure first that the iPhone you are buying is unlocked.

If it’s locked to a network say Vodafone, you would not be able to use it in your network Globe Telecom and you would have to unlock it first. The steps here are for activation. So make sure you clear this up before buying.

    • Ige says:

I’m just wondering, why can’t he activate it? What is his specific problem with activation? I’m just asking because some US carriers require activation at time of purchase. And most likely is that it’s locked to one carrier.

Well, if you’re going to buy it, good luck. And I hope I was able of help.

  6. Cream Puffs says:

Very well Ige, I so much appreciate the posts here. Now it wont be harder for me to activate my Iphone. Thanks to you!

  7. Obed says:

    Hi there Ige,

Well, I don’t know much about the said item, the only thing i know about it, he’s just selling it for a cheap price because it’s not yet activated. I’m think it’s still lock to ATnT.

Is it possible to unlock it first then use the above step to activate the phone?

Thanks for the reply Ige, I appreciate it a lot.

    More power to your site.

    -Obed C.

    • Ige says:

If it’s still locked to ATnT then you would have to ask ATnT to unlock the iPhone 3G for you.

Another way would be to jailbreak the phone which I DONT really recommend. It deprives you of some of the features of the iPhone and if ever you need to update it, you wouldn’t be able to.

I agree that it’s a great possibility that the iPhone is still locked to a carrier in the US. He wouldn’t be selling it at such a cheap price if it wasn’t.

  8. How says:

I just bought this iPhone 3g off eBay that is supposedly jailbroken and unlocked. I inserted the T-mobile SIM card in and had no singnal. I was told by the seller that the phone needs to be activated, but I thought the unlocked phone does not need to be activated. If activated is still required, how do I go about doing that? Please help.

    • Ige says:

      Hi How,

Unlocked phones still need to be activated. Just follow the steps here if indeed your iPhone is unlocked already and it should be usable.

      • jay says:

hey i have a unlocked iphone 2g and jailbroken and i was using it with no sim card then i synced it to itunes and updated it dont ask why smh and now its locked on the emergency slide saying no sim card installed insert a vaild sim with no pin lock to activate iphone.. ughhhh

please help can u use it like i did before

  9. iMomo says:

Hello. I just want to ask if just in case the iphone needs a firmware update and i don’t want to update it, is there an option to skip it? Since based on the screenshot above, you were only given Update and Restore options. And if there’s a way to skip it, will activation still be successful?

You said that registration and setup is unnecessary, so does it mean that after it updates the carrier settings, it’s already activated?

    Thank you in advance. :D

    • Ige says:

      Hi iMomo,

You may skip the Update option and not do anything and your iPhone will still be activated. Just ignore the Update button and continue to use iTunes.

The only problem is whenever you connect iTunes, it will always show you that an update is available for your iPhone.

  10. Tan says:

    Hi Ige

    I have a question
After activated iPhone, i insert the turbo sim(with t-mobile sim on it) Do you think it will work?

    Thanks so much

  11. J5 says:

Thinking about getting the new iphone 3gs. I’m already an att customer and was just wondering if I can just order one from apple and activate it at home using your steps. I do not want to lose my number and rollover minutes. Does any of that change when I go to an iphone or do I get to keep them just need to upgrade to iphone data plan? Thanks for any help!

    • Ige says:

      Hi J5,

From what I know, if you insert the AT&T sim to an Iphone 3GS bought from Apple, you should be able to activate it without losing your number. But I advise that you be extra sure and ask this from AT&T customer service. Hope it work out for you! I heard though that AT&T’s network is still not ready with the features of Iphone 3GS.

  12. Bobby says:

Just wondering; I am buying an unlocked iPhone 2g off of ebay. I currently have a Blackberry pearl 8120. I was wondering if the sim card from that phone would be able to fit in the iPhone 2g. I am with T-mobile service (unfortunantly). If I get this phone, should I ask them if its reset first? Is there any other problems I might run into, being a T-Mobile customer, using an iPhone? I just wanna make sure I dont buy this phone and not be able to use it. Thanks!

    • Ige says:

      Hi Bobby,

As long as the Iphone 2G you’re buying is unlocked, you should be able to use your SIM in it. You SHOULDN’T have any problems with it because you’re experience will be just like switching to a new “ordinary” phone.

  13. khaygie10 says:

    Hi lge,

My iPhone 3G came from dubai… I can use the globe sim card… but when I upgraded it to v3… It says “Sim Card is not blah blah blah”

    What should I do?!

The iPhone is on emergency slide…

    • Ige says:

It could be that what you bought was originally a locked version but was just unlocked. I’ve read that software unlocked iPhones after update got locked again after updating. Factory unlocked iPhones however stay unlocked.

  14. shenku says:

I have a problem with a 2G I bought from eBay. I already have a 3G as well with a working SIM card. I want to be able to swap my SIM between my 3G and the 2G I just bought.

However when I insert the SIM from my 3G into the 2G it wants me to connect to iTunes. When I do connect to iTunes it goes through an activation process and asks for the last 4 of my soc#. I enter this and it says it can’t identify me!

I have AT&T service and they seem to have no clue. They keep telling me it should just “work” but it doesn’t.

Did I get a bad phone?

  15. bodydetox says:

my iPhone was actually a gift from my girlfriend. i really love this phone and i think that this is the best phone that money can buy. i like the features and the design.

  16. Muscle says:

Can someone help me? i have activated my iphone and i cannot access other screens. It keeps saying that it cannot activate cellular data network. I am not subscribed to a cellular data service.
What is the cellular data service and how to subscribe to it?

    • Ige says:

What feature are you accessing? Is it data/internet? If it is, you will really get that message if you arent subscribed to internet services of your carrier. Better to just use WiFi.

      • Cypherman says:

If you are pay and go or pay monthly you need to change the settings manually, change it to eg. Payandgo.o2.uk or paymonthly.o2.uk. Then turn it off then on again. For other networks call your service provider for more info.

  17. fhidou says:

I bought a jailbroken iphone 3gs and i restored it. After the iphone asked me to insert a valid sim to activate phone. I tried many carriers non activated it. Is their a way to activate it without simcard??

  18. dungle says:

    can I ask a question ?
When I active iphone 3gs so we need looking for simcard AT&T or I can use T Moble let active iphone without contract
Thank you o much for my question ..

    • Ige says:

If it’s unlocked you can use it with any SIM card. But if it’s not and locked only to the AT&T network you can only use AT&T SIM card.

  19. Martha says:

the iPhone 3G looks very cool and feature packed. i will be saving some of my allowance to buy that phone.

  20. Ali says:

    Hey there Ige

Well i bought an iphone off from a guy on the internet. The phone is locked to rogers (thats a carrier in Canada). He has a contract and the iphone is registered under his name and number.

I wanted to ask if i use a Prepaid Card with the iphone, will i be able to activate it with the prepaid card and use the steps you provided?

    Thanks…

    • Ige says:

You can if its a rogers prepaid SIM card. If you’re going to put in a SIM card from another carrier you wont be able to use it if it’s locked.

  21. roy says:

i have a iphone 3g that i brought back from norway, ive put my o2 sim card into it and it work work?, it just says in correct sim card, ive not got another sim card, so where do i go from here?, is there a by pass like they had a year ago for the 2g iphones? aS I had one from taihland with the same issue??

    please advise

    regards

  22. xRoxyy says:

    Hi lge
i bought the iphone 3g from cousin, he has at&t and so do i, and he has had his phone for a few months now. can i just insert my sim card and be ready, or will i have to activate it too? we both have at&t.

    help would be nice.
    thank you.

  23. Rin says:

I bought an unlocked Iphone and now I wanna use it with Pay as you go plan of AT&T network! But I don’t know how to active my phone! Are phone activation and sim card activation same?

    • Ige says:

Phone activation and SIM activation are different. If you need to activate your SIM you’d have to ask your carrier (in your case AT&T) how to do it.

  24. Andy says:

My brother just upgraded to a Iphone 3gs and he gave me his old Iphone 3g. When I insert my sim into the phone it doesn’t say anything but I get almost no service or just 1 bar. What would I need to do to make it work? We’re both on AT&T btw.

  25. Joahnnna says:

hi.. i have this friend.. after he updated his iphone.. the phone cannot read anymore the globe simcard.. thus the simcard are still running on the other phone…
why thus the network in iphone cannot be read??.. please help us..

    • Ige says:

Maybe your iPhone isn’t officially unlocked? (Which means it was really locked and was just unlocked by a third party)

That means when you update your iPhone it would become locked again.

  26. Mowaffaq says:

    Hi,

I bout my iPhone 3GS from a retail store not a GSM provider, it is supposed to be factory unlocked and it came with Firmware 3.0 jailbroken with Cydia installed, and all was great at this point. I decided to upgrade it to firmware 3.1.2 on iTunes and I did, but I am getting the sim locked screen (exactly what you have posted in this article) only when I put in my sim that I were using before the update, iTunes says that my sim card does not appear to be supported and that I need to use a supported carrier sim card to activate my iPhone !!!
I suspected that my iPhone 3GS was not factory unlocked like the retailer said, so I searched for its model number which is MC133X/A on the internet and found that indeed this model is among the iphones that are factory unlocked! which should accept any carrier sim card!!
So whay is it asking for a certain sim card to activate???
Please help. I can not go to the retailer because it is in another country.
    Thanks

    • Ige says:

It looks like you really have a locked iPhone 3Gs – that’s why it got locked when you updated it. The model number doesn’t really tell if it’s factory unlocked or not. Maybe you can just have it unlocked through a third party. I wouldn’t be too sure on how it would affect your iPhone warranty though.

    • AVJunkie says:

Firmware 3.1.2 can’t be unlocked yet…anywhere that you can download jailbreakers from, will tell you not to upgrade to 3.1.2 if you want to keep your unlock….you won’t be able to unlock you iPhone until they find a weakness in the new firmware.

Hope you like your new iPod!!! Lol

    • wonkat says:

Ok so your part number MC133X/A indicates it’s an Australian source iPhone 3GS 32 GB Black. That, if bought from the online Apple Australia store, comes factory unlocked, so there would have been no need to jailbreak/Cydia it – as it was a factory unlocked iPhone in the first place.
The problem is having jailbroken it, you’re now facing issues, as iTunes no longer recognises it is a factory unlocked model .
iTunes 3.1.2 included a “baseband” upgrade, which is yet to be hacked effectively for unlocking.
As one of the posts mentioned- enjoy your new iPod, at least for now!
Shame, because what you had bought was a full factory unlocked part number iPhone 3GS! That’s why it’s dodgy to buy from resellers, and always better to do some research before buying – the fact that the Cydia icon was on the phone whenyou bought it is a clear warning sign, despite the part number.

  27. moko says:

i just bought an iphone 3gs, and on the activation screen, i chose register later, I could then use my rogers sim card, which is my original intention. out of curiosity, i inserted a fido sim card, and it took me back to the registration screen again, and after I clicked register later, again, it also allowed me to use my fido sim card. Is this normal that before registration, an iphone can work with both fido and rogers sim card? the seller told me that this is locked to rogers, but it’s a brand new iphone.
I’m too worried to register my phone now, because, i don’t want it to lose the flexibility of using 2 sim cards. What do you think? Did I get lucky and received a factory unlocked iphone?
    Thanks!

  28. bench says:

hi..I bought an Iphone from a friend that came from US..everything here is the same..and I want to use it here in UAE..is this step possible?if I insert a SIMCARD like etisalat?..

    • Ige says:

Make sure first that the iPhone you’re buying is unlocked. Otherwise you won’t be able to use it with any other kind of SIM card.

      • bench says:

yes, because I was able to use it with my simcard..the reason why it was locked is beacuse I updated it on Itunes..now I dont have the simcard so what should I do?

        • Ige says:

Maybe you can have it unlocked. Although what I really recommend is that you just buy an unlocked iPhone (although this would be more expensive).

  29. zeeshan says:

My brother has sent me iphone 3g (pin pack/brand new) from usa
I am here in pakistan but its really not working here.
It has also at&t sim card but that does not work but
Whenever i insert a sim card (local simcard of pakistani networks ) it says invalid sim
    So what should i do?
    It really sucks
Please do help me in this regard
    Plzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    • Ige says:

If your iPhone is not unlocked you really won’t be able to use just any SIM card with it. If you want to use the AT&T SIM in the iPhone and you’re in Pakistan I guess you’d have to ask for roaming service.

  30. Daniel says:

I have recently found an iphone, i’d like to start using it, i have had the phone unlcked and restored it. it can see that there is an o2 sim card but there is no signal, it also says that it is waiting to be activated. i have done this but nothing is happening, any ideas????

    Thanks Dan.

    • Ige says:

Looks like it’s the SIM and not the iPhone which needs to be activated. Contact your carrier (in this case O2) on how to activate your SIM.

  31. Kelvin says:

hi, i just bought an iphone 3gs from ebay, i was informed that the iphone is a brand new one and already unlock with no contract. I have put the sim card into the iphone and connected the iphone to my computer for activation, but itunes showed that my sim card is not valid. I have no idea with it, what had happen to the iphone?

    • Kelvin says:

The itunes shows that ” The Sim Card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported.”
      Is the iphone already locked?

    • Ige says:

Check if the SIM card is inserted correctly. Re-insert it if possible.

If it’s inserted correctly, maybe your iPhone 3GS really isn’t unlocked. Better check with the seller.

      • Frogga82 says:

Hi Ige I have the same problem as Kelvin bought phone new off ebay was locked to optus but thats ok I have an optus sim. When i got it it worked fine for a day then I think I got a virus and the screen just stayed white, phone worked but all you could see was a white screen. So i restored it in itunes and then followed your steps above but now saying “The sim card inserted does not appear to be supported ”
        Any help Thanks
        FRogga82

        • Ige says:

Have you tried another optus SIM card? That’s weird, as if it’s locked to optus it should work with your optus SIM card. Maybe it was just unlocked by the seller?

  32. Natali says:

    Hi Ige..

  34. Lauren says:

Hi, I bought the first I phone that was issued today off a woman on ebay for cheap. Its in good condition and she said that it was her mothers and she had bought her the new one. I have att obviously not an I phone plan. What steps do I take from here? Will I be charged for the I phone plan? I bought this I phone because I cant upgrade my phone till september. I obviouly would rather not pay for the I phone plan. I know someone that can unlock phones. But you know what you are doing and obviously I am a confused chick! I am starting to regret my purchase. Help

    • Ige says:

      Hi Lauren,

If I understood you correctly, you said you are in AT&T but not in an iPhone plan. You bought an iPhone in ebay and would like to use it.

If that iPhone is unlocked, you may be able to use it with any SIM card, including yours. If it’s locked to AT&T, you can still use it as you have an AT&T SIM card and you won’t be charged with an iPhone plan as you didn’t subscribe for one (unless the woman who you purchased the iPhone made you sign subscription documents for an iPhone plan). If it’s locked in another network other than AT&T then you really can’t use it and would have to unlock the iPhone with other means.

      Hope I helped.

I got a brand new rogers iphone 3GS and I plan on jailbreaking and unlocking it, and I want to know if I can activate it without a sim card or do I have to go buy a sim card and then buy a new one again after unlocking it?

    Help…Please! :P

    • Ige says:

I’m not really into jailbreaking or unlocking , but I’m sure you need to activate it with a SIM card and I don’t think you need to buy a new one after you’ve unlocked it.

  40. alisyed says:

    Dear lge;
i got already jailbreak iphone 3g with 3.1.2 firmware and just updated it to 3.1.3 firmware from itunes, and i got the same error which u mentioned in ur screenshots. I got two queries for u man, first: how to check whether the handset is factory unlocked or not? and second: plz guide me how to activate it as itunes is not giving me the carrier option also i tune shows to insert compatible sim. though my sim is perfectly ok and in complete proper working. really looking for help!!!

    • Ige says:

As iTunes is asking for a compatible SIM, I’m guessing you don’t have a factory unlocked iPhone 3G. You might have to unlock it again so as to make it work for your SIM.

  41. paul says:

can activate an ipod touch using that step???or i just the download itunes and activate the ipod touch…..plss help me on how????

Hi, I just bought a 3g phone off ebay. It’s locked for ATT. I inserted my ATT SIM from my blackberry and it says no service. Nothing about the SIM being incorrectly inserted or nothing. I reset a bunch of times and still, it boots up fine and the icons appear but it says no service. I havent hooked it up to itunes yet but my question is should it just work or do I need to activate it with itunes?

    • Ige says:

Maybe its in flight mode? If it isn’t try other SIM cards. If that still doesn’t work then there may be something wrong with the phone.

  43. marc says:

i am plannig to buy a new iphone 3g from sprint-shop. they say that
    * Phone activation required before use.
    * Please Note iPhone 3G has been Factory unlocked. They are not software unlocked .

what do i do for this? will the itunes stuff make it work for any GSM network?

    Hi,

I have recently been given an iPhone from my friend. I know nothing about iPhones, so I was wondering if you could help me out. I have a SIM card, but it comes up with the error “insert sim card or inserted incorrectly” I was wondering if there is a way to activate and use the phone without the SIM card. I have Verizon and will eventually jailbreak the iPhone, but I don’t have the slightest idea how to do that. I restored the iPhone to original settings and now all I get is that error. If you could help me out I’d greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance,

    Nick

If it’s unlocked you would be able to use it with any SIM. However, if it isn’t you need to have it unlocked before you use it. And you can’t unlock it without the SIM card. There may be ways out there to have it activated without the SIM card but it involves jailbreaking the iPhone which I do not cover.

Does Apple sell unlocked iphones, and does it pay GS iphone and use my 2G sim card in the new iphone but I am afraid it won’t work without an unlocked iphone. Please let me know ASAP

    • Ige says:

Sorry Carol but I don’t really understand your question. If you’re asking if Apple sells unlocked iPhones – it depends. In our country, I’ve heard of several people selling factory unlocked iPhones.

Correction: does it pay to buy the iphone from them? I want to buy a 3GS iphone and use my 2G sim caard in the new iphone, but I am afraid it won’t work without an unlocked iphone. Waiting for help

    • Ige says:

If what you’re buying is factory unlocked, you may use your 2G SIM card in the iPhone 3GS. So make sure you’re buying is factory unlocked to avoid any problems.

    Dear Ige,
my brother gonna buy me an iphone from U.S
i wanted to know about that deal of at&t
that u buy the 3gs for 199$ and choose between 2 packages
but what’s that 2 year contract?
does it means that i have to pay something along the 2 years beside the 199$ + having a locked phone??
i really cannot get that offer till now

    • Ige says:

Yes you’re correct. It means that you have to pay something along the 2 years beside the $199 + having a locked phone.

That $199 is the price of the iPhone only. It still includes a 2 year service plan from AT&T which you are obligated to pay for 2 years. Not much of a bargain if you ask me.
